New signs also show the speed of offending vehicles. There are 20mph speed limit signs around schools and the police continually adopt new anti-speeding tactics, such as roadside cameras.

On the safety improvements around schools, there is no doubt that the 20mph speed limit is a great step forward, but I do not see any reason why things cannot be carried a step further.

I was reminded today that the speed limit for lorries and haulage trucks on the single carriageway is 40mph, which is 20mph below the speed limit for cars; the limit goes up to 50mph on the dual carriageway.

The member raises an important point about the incidence of accidents on Scotland's trunk and local roads, and the measures that we are taking. The 20mph zone scheme, which she mentioned, is particularly important for Scotland's schools: 173 primary and 123 secondary schools already take part in that scheme.

Support has been provided since 2003 for 20mph schemes around schools, related safety projects and home zones (20mph); a child pedestrian training pilot in West Dunbartonshire (CPTP), and funding for new school travel co-ordinator posts (STC).

It seems to our group that there should be a maximum speed limit of 20mph because of the line's proximity to the walkway and cycleway.
