  • Date lodged: Monday, 11 November 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-15374

That the Parliament applauds three North Lanarkshire Council projects on being shortlisted for the Scottish Public Service Awards (SPSA); understands that, now in its 11th year, the SPSA, which are run by Holyrood Communications in partnership with the Scottish Parliament and Scottish Government, celebrate the significant contributions of Scotland’s public services; acknowledges the shortlisted projects, including A Warm Scottish Welcome – North Lanarkshire Ukrainian Resettlement Project, which is nominated for both the Project and Programme Management Award and the Community Engagement Award; commends what it see as the Council’s rapid and compassionate response in repurposing vacant properties to create homes for 200 displaced Ukrainian families, ensuring a supportive environment and opportunities for these families to rebuild their lives; recognises the Breastfeeding Friendly North Lanarkshire initiative, which is nominated for the Policy into Practice Award; acknowledges what it sees as the vital and transformative role this initiative has played in changing attitudes and fostering a culture of support for breastfeeding in North Lanarkshire, where, it understands, rates have historically been low; believes that this effort has led to an 8.8% point increase in breastfeeding rates at 6-8 weeks and that this has made North Lanarkshire the first local authority in Scotland to achieve the Breastfeeding Friendly Scotland Local Authority Award at the Gold standard; applauds North Lanarkshire Low Carbon Learning, a collaboration between North Lanarkshire Academies and BE-ST, which is nominated for the Sustainability Award; recognises the programme’s success in equipping young learners with essential skills for low-carbon building practises, securing an equipped workforce, and driving Scotland towards a low-carbon future; commends all involved in what it sees as these impactful initiatives, which, it believes, contribute meaningfully to the wellbeing of North Lanarkshire’s communities, from improving health outcomes and providing safe spaces for families displaced by conflict to fostering a skilled green workforce, and extends its best wishes for the upcoming awards ceremony, which take place on 10 December 2024 at the Scottish Parliament, and for the projects continued success.
