Stalwart Members of Kirkmaiden Community Harbour Trust to Retire after Saving Drummore Harbour

  • Submitted by: Finlay Carson, Galloway and West Dumfries, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 22 October 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-14929

That the Parliament congratulates and thanks Janet Ridgway and Alexander Peebles for what it sees as their incredible contribution over a long number of years in bringing Drummore Harbour back into a navigable state; recognises that they formed Kirkmaiden Community Harbour Trust in 2014, along with the late Marilyn Castle, who was the first ever chairperson and led the first deputation to the Scottish Parliament along with the support of local constituency MSP, Finlay Carson, to highlight the harbour’s problems, including a lengthy legal battle to become prescriptive claimant for the harbour and Drummore basin; acknowledges that the Trust’s sole aim is to breathe new life into the 19th century harbour to provide more marine-based services in order to support what it considers to be the fragile local economy, and understands that it managed to successfully overcome a 40-feet breach to the outer seawall caused by Storm Barra by implementing a project to install stone and cement buttresses along the inner side of the seawall to provide greater substantial protection in years to come; understands that Janet and Alexander, along with Wendi Cuffe, plan to retire at the Trust’s annual general meeting in November 2024, and wishes them well with their future plans.
