#SayNoToShein Campaign

  • Submitted by: Mark Ruskell, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 12 September 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-14451

That the Parliament welcomes the #SayNoToShein campaign, which calls on the UK Government to block the application of Chinese-founded fast-fashion company, Shein, from listing on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) until the completion of an investigation into the company’s labour practices, environmental impact, and tax arrangements; notes the report by independent fashion watchdog, Remake, Fashion Accountability Report 2024, which assessed big clothes companies on their environmental, human rights and equitability practices and scored the fast-fashion company, Shein, at a low 6 out of 150 points; understands that an ongoing petition aimed at gathering public support for the #SayNoToShein campaign secured over 40,000 signatures from individuals within three weeks of lodging; notes the finding of the non-profit network on circular economy, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, that more than half of all fast fashion is discarded in less than a year; highlights what it sees as the importance of progressing towards the global challenge to increase reuse and recycling rates, while transitioning toward a zero waste and circular economy, and wishes the volunteers of the #SayNoToShein campaign group all the best in their efforts in advocating for social and environmental due diligence for the fast-fashion corporation, Shein, ahead of any potential LSE listing.
