Chewing Gum Levy

  • Submitted by: Kevin Stewart, Aberdeen Central, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 25 July 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13949

That the Parliament recognises the reported estimated cost to local authorities across the UK for removing chewing gum is around £7 million; suggests that this cost should be paid for by those who produce the gum in the first place in the shape of a levy placed on chewing gum companies; understands that this proposal has significant support from local authorities and organisations from across the country; believes that the unsightly nature of discarded gum on the streets needs to be eradicated, and calls on the UK Government to introduce a levy swiftly with the aim to ensure that streets are kept clean and so that local authority budgets can be spent more effectively.
