The 166th Famous Alva Games

  • Submitted by: Alexander Stewart, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 12 July 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13877

That the Parliament congratulates the Famous Alva Games on the 166th edition of the event, which will take place at Johnstone Park on 13 July 2024; anticipates an excellent turnout for the vast programme of events and entertainment, which will include Highland games, athletics, grass track cycling, Highland dancing, heavyweight events and hill races; acknowledges that the organisers’ objective is to provide everyone with a memorable and enjoyable day as well as honouring the memory and ideals of the founders of the event in the 1840s; understands that this year, for the first time at the games, there will now be female heavyweight events, which follow on from the junior heavyweight events that were introduced in 2023 and were reported to be a big success; believes that the games have been made possible thanks to new sponsorship from Blair Drummond Safari Park and all of the other new and regular sponsors; welcomes the news that the guest of honour for 2024 will be Alex James Colquhoun, who is the chairman of the Scottish section of the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain; acknowledges that the Guild and the Famous Alva Games have had a tremendously strong friendship over many decades and commends them on what it sees as their sterling endeavours for all their communities, and congratulates everyone involved with the event.
