Successful 2024 Annan Raft Race

  • Submitted by: Emma Harper, South Scotland, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 10 July 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13860

That the Parliament applauds the Annan Riding of the Marches and Gala Day organisers for resurrecting the annual Annan Raft Race, which took place at the end of June 2024 after the event had been paused in 2019; understands that the race event consists of makeshift rafts, many of them of deliberately dubious stability, hilariously rowed by participants in costume on the River Annan; further understands that the flotilla had 15 crewed entries and was launched from its traditional starting place of the site of the former Cuthbertson Memorial Bridge; congratulates the PastIts, crewed by a collective of past cornets with a reigning 249 years between them, on arriving first over the finish line, followed by SS Beefcake, sponsored by J Whiteside Joinery, while in third place was the raft Ship Faced; understands that prizes were awarded at Annan’s Blue Bell Inn, including for the Best Dressed Raft, which was awarded to, You can be Anything, captained by the 1998 cornet, and thanks everyone for taking part in what the organisers hope will again be an annual tradition that continues for a long, happy, and very wet future.
