Aberdeen Festival of the Sea

  • Submitted by: Kevin Stewart, Aberdeen Central, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 09 July 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13856

That the Parliament welcomes the arrival of the Festival of the Sea to Aberdeen in July 2024; notes that the two-week festival, running from 15 to 28 July, will celebrate the city's rich maritime heritage, showcasing how modern-day Aberdeen has been shaped by its relationship with the sea and the coastline; understands that the events and activities forming part of the festival will include Stories at the Sea, a free, family fun weekend at Union Terrace Gardens on 20-21 July, and the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums, and that further events and activities are taking place at Aberdeen Science Centre, the Arts Centre, Aberdeen Sports Village and the iconic Beach Ballroom; further understands that Open Road will be coordinating a host of events at "Fittie" to celebrate the community's history as a fishing village through exhibitions, film showings, arts, crafts, nature walks and more; notes that three tall ships, the Swan, the TS Royalist and the Reaper, will visit the city's harbour throughout the two-week festival to mark one year until the Tall Ships Race arrives in Aberdeen in July 2025; believes that the festival will be an excellent opportunity for locals and tourists to learn about the rich history of Aberdeen, and hopes that all those participating in the festival have an enjoyable and educational experience.
