  • Date lodged: Monday, 01 July 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13823

That the Parliament commends Heriot-Watt University for successfully hosting the 44th Annual Sunbelt Conference, which took place in Edinburgh from 23 to 30 June 2024; believes that Sunbelt is widely regarded as the most significant annual event in network analysis, which is a method of studying social structures through the use of networks and graph theory; understands that this is the first time the conference was held in Scotland; further understands that representatives from more than 500 universities took part in the event and presented over 700 papers in 59 thematic areas related to the 2024 theme of “Networks and Resilience”; understands that Heriot-Watt University’s staff and students were joined by over 1,000 visitors from across Scotland and the world for the conference; believes that the event brought what it sees as major benefits to the Scottish academic community as well as the local economy, and wishes all researchers and organisers, including Heriot-Watt University’s Centre for Networks and Enterprise Excellence and the International Network for Social Network Analysis, continued success.
