March with the Miners on 40th Anniversary of the Miners' Strike

  • Submitted by: Annabelle Ewing, Cowdenbeath, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 27 June 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13810

That the Parliament recognises the recent March with the Miners event, held in Benarty, on 15 June 2024, in recognition of the 40th anniversary of the miners' strike; notes that strike veterans, family members, and supporters marched from Ballingry to Lochore Meadows Country Park for a rally before heading to Lochore Miners' Welfare Institute, where there was a display of original mining banners from the strike, mining artefacts, mining merchandise, soup kitchen, mining-related poetry readings and music from a band; understands that speakers at the rally covered the struggles faced by many during the strike, actions taken since the strike, including the fight to enact the Miners' Strike (Pardons) (Scotland) Act 2022, and the role played by the women's action groups, amongst other things; further understands that the event was well attended both by the local community and those from further afield; commends the volunteers for organising what it sees as such an important historical event, and ensuring that the impact of the strike is never forgotten in Fife and across Scotland, and supports the call for justice to finally be secured in terms of the entitlement under the Mineworkers' Pension Scheme.
