Shetland Charity, OPEN, Wins at National Youth Work Awards

  • Submitted by: Beatrice Wishart, Shetland Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 19 June 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13713

That the Parliament congratulates Shetland charity, OPEN, for being named Team of the Year at the National Youth Work Awards, organised by YouthLink Scotland; understands that OPEN became Shetland’s first youth-led charity in 2023, transitioning from being a project of Voluntary Action Shetland; further understands that OPEN’s initiatives range from peer education workshops, including a pioneering study on young people’s attitudes to alcohol and drugs, to "Da Café", a youth café that provides a safe and welcoming space for young people; believes that the Team of the Year Award recognises OPEN’s practical and effective approach to youth work, with its activities designed for and by young people, ensuring relevance and impact; considers that OPEN’s youth work equips young people with skills and confidence through opportunities to contribute to their community, and offers its congratulations to all involved with the charity.
