Celebrating Refugee Week and the Refugee Festival

  • Submitted by: Maggie Chapman, North East Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 18 June 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13686

That the Parliament recognises that the week from 17 to 23 June 2024 is Refugee Week; notes that the theme for Refugee Week 2024 is "Our Home" and that, during the week, everyone is invited to celebrate what "Our Home" means to them, from the places that they gather to share meals to their collective home, planet earth; further notes that, for many, home is not a safe place, because of war, political or social identity, the climate crisis, natural disasters or many other reasons; believes that Scotland has an important role to play in providing safety and refuge for those who have to flee their homes and rebuild their lives elsewhere; commends the Refugee Festival Scotland for organising what it sees as a diverse and inspiring programme of events to celebrate creativity, culture and community, and the strength and resilience of those who rise every day to build new lives and pursue new livelihoods, despite the challenges and uncertainties that they face; believes that the so-called hostile environment created by what it considers to be inhuman and inhumane UK Government policies does not support the fostering of safe and secure refuges for those who need it; thanks all those involved in supporting refugees despite the challenging environment, and urges everyone to do whatever they can to make Scotland an open and welcoming country.
