West Lothian Nurse, Frances Aitken, Named Winner of the Mental Health Nursing Award at the RCN Scotland Nurse of the Year Awards 2024

That the Parliament congratulates Frances Aitken, lead dementia nurse for Stress and Distress at St John’s Hospital, Livingston, on being named winner of the Mental Health Nursing Award Category at the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Scotland Nurse of the Year Awards 2024; understands that Frances works to improve the care experience for patients with cognitive decline in St John’s Hospital's acute setting by reducing stress and distress, emergency psychiatric interventions and over-medication with sedatives; further understands that Frances has led the implementation of the Stress and Distress programme, running awareness training for staff for their understanding of cognitive conditions, helping to reduce the need for one-to-one nursing, sedation and emergency calls, along with improved pain management for patients; believes that her work has improved staff knowledge, increased partnership with families and enhanced patient experience, and wishes her continued success in her career.
