Bid to Increase Red Squirrel Numbers in the Scottish West Highlands

  • Submitted by: Jamie Halcro Johnston, Highlands and Islands, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 03 June 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13445

That the Parliament commends Trees for Life and the Drimnin Estate for their efforts to boost the red squirrel population in the west Highlands; recognises the recent release of six red squirrels into the broadleaf woodland of the Morvern peninsula as part of this reintroduction project; notes that this follows the successful release of 21 red squirrels near Lochaline two years ago; acknowledges the significant threat that habitat loss reportedly poses to the estimated 120,000 red squirrels in Scotland, and supports ongoing rewilding and conservation initiatives to ensure the survival and growth of this iconic native species.
