80th Anniversary of D-Day Landings

  • Submitted by: Rachael Hamilton, Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 30 May 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13325

That the Parliament recognises that 6 June 2024 will mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Normandy landings, which it believes was the largest seaborne invasion in history; understands that, along with the associated airborne operations, it marked the beginning of the liberation of France and western Europe, and, ultimately, the beginning of the end of the Second World War, which claimed the lives of some 75 million people; further understands that the Royal British Legion will be hosting a service of Remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum on 6 June 2024 to commemorate the 80-year anniversary, and will be welcoming the brave D-Day and Normandy veterans along with their families to the event to thank them for their service to their country, and to remember all those who gave their lives to protect democratic values from autocracy; considers that at a time of increased geopolitical tension across the world, it is more important than ever to thank the work that this country's veterans have done to protect democratic values and the rules-based international system, which it believes has come under threat in recent years, and thanks all current members of the Armed Forces who continue to work tirelessly every day to protect democracy and keep the country safe from those who wish to do it harm.
