Firework Control Zones

  • Submitted by: Patrick Harvie, Glasgow, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 23 May 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13301

That the Parliament notes the reported cross-party decision of Glasgow City Council to work towards implementing a Firework Control Zone covering the entire local authority area; believes that dangerous and anti-social use of fireworks can cause significant negative impacts on communities, animals and the emergency services and supports action being taken to reduce these; understands that Edinburgh City Council is also considering city-wide firework controls and hopes that these are effective in changing behaviour; believes that restricting the general public sale of most categories of fireworks will ultimately be the most effective way of reducing firework-related harms; calls, therefore, on the Scottish Government to progress its planned licensing scheme and on the UK Government to use its powers to restrict sales of fireworks; encourages people to attend organised public displays wherever possible, and calls, therefore, on Glasgow Life to reinstate an annual, large-scale display at Glasgow Green.
