International Plastic Free Day

  • Submitted by: Lorna Slater, Lothian, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 22 May 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13285

That the Parliament welcomes International Plastic Free Day on 25 May 2024, which encourages everyone to say "no" to single-use plastics for one day and raise awareness of how much plastic is wasted every day; understands that Scotland became the first UK nation to work towards banning problematic plastics such as plastic straws, cutlery, balloon sticks, plates, stirrers and takeaway carriers made of expanded polystyrene; regrets that, every year, hundreds of millions of single-use plastics are wasted, with many of them littering beaches, waters and parks, and highlights what it sees as the great work of Zero Waste Hub by Shrub Co-op and Weigh to Go Edinburgh, which it considers are organisations that empower the community to live a low-carbon life and provide convenient solutions to sustainable living.
