FIFA Congress and Israel

  • Submitted by: James Dornan, Glasgow Cathcart, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 17 May 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13275

That the Parliament notes that the 74th FIFA Congress is taking place on 17 May 2024 in Bangkok; understands that FIFA will carry out a legal assessment before it makes a decision on Palestine's call to suspend the Israeli federation over the war in Gaza; notes that the Scotland National Women’s Team is due to meet Israel on 31 May 2024; further notes the suspension by FIFA of Russia and Russian teams following the invasion of Ukraine, and believes that a similar ban should apply to Israel and its teams; acknowledges the reported ruling by the International Court of Justice and the view that there may be a case to answer that the actions of Israel in Gaza constitute genocide against the Palestinian people, and considers that any state found to have caused a plausible risk of genocide should not be afforded sporting opportunities and should be banned from all competitions with immediate effect.
