To ask the Scottish Government how many NHS boards have approved the use of the Freestyle Libre glucose monitoring system.
Answer
Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre flash glucose monitoring sensors were added to the Scottish Drug Tariff from 1 November 2017.
It is for NHS Boards to consider inclusion of the sensors in their local formulary based on the context of their local populations and priorities whilst managing their budgets and resources effectively.
It is my understanding that at this time four NHS Boards in Scotland have decided to include the sensors in their local formulary.
Due to the lack of long term clinical evidence, benefits and cost-effectiveness of FreeStyle Libre, other NHS Boards have decided to await the advice statement from the Scottish Health Technology Group expected in the summer, before considering the issue further.
