To ask the Scottish Government what it is doing to encourage an increase in the number of senior female academics.
Answer
The Scottish Government is committed to helping more women to achieve their full potential in the labour market, including in our universities. Through the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), we are working with universities in Scotland to drive forward a culture change on equality and diversity issues. The SFC funds and works closely with the Equality Challenge Unit, the College Development Network and the Higher Education Academy to support Higher Education Institutions in this work. Programmes such as the ECU Athena SWAN Awards and the Aurora Programme recognise commitment to advancing woman’s careers in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine) subjects and the development of leadership of women in higher education. The majority of our universities have signed up to a set of principles that state a commitment to addressing gender inequalities in academia, including at senior levels. The SFC is currently developing a Gender Action Plan, in partnership with Skills Development Scotland and the Scottish Government. This will set out how it will work with the colleges, universities and partners to address gender imbalances and inequality across staff and student populations.

To ask the Scottish Government what it is doing to address the reported gender pay gap at universities.
Answer
The terms and conditions of employment for all staff is a matter for individual universities as autonomous institutions. Through the Scottish Funding Council, the Scottish Government funds the Equality Challenge Unit to support universities and other higher education institutions to advance equality for their staff and students. In addition, the Scottish Government funds and has been an active partner in the Close the Gap project. Close the Gap raises awareness about the gender pay gap and its various causes and encourages action by employees and employers to tackle the causes and close the gap. Close the Gap has provided support to colleges and universities on conducting pay reviews and producing robust equal pay statements.
