To ask the Scottish Executive how much of the £20 million announced for education and lifelong learning during the stage 3 debate on the Budget (Scotland) (No.4) Bill (Official Report c. 23368) will be spent on student support for higher education students.
Answer
Decisions on the deployment of this funding are yet to be taken. We are working with both the Scottish Funding Council and the Student Awards Agency for Scotland to determine how best to allocate this resource to reflect the balance of demand emerging through the applications process. Nonetheless, we made clear our intention during the Budget statement: we expect the additional resource to provide support to an additional 7,500 higher education students studying in our colleges and universities in the next academic year.
