To ask the Scottish Executive how much it forecasts spending to be on upgrading visitor, staff and administrative facilities in each prison in the next five years.

I have asked Tony Cameron, Chief Executive of the Scottish Prison Service to respond. His response is as follows:

“The SPS’s Estate Development Programme will in the next five years give priority to the elimination of the practice of slopping-out by replacing out-of-date prisoner accommodation with modern facilities. SPS is seeking to provide completely redeveloped prisons at HMP Edinburgh, HMP Glenochil, HMP Perth and HMYOI Polmont during this period. Some upgrading of visitor, staff and administrative facilities will be incorporated in this programme. Separate costings for these facilities are not available at this stage of the process.”

“During the last five years, the SPS’s Estate Development Programme included a new health centre and staff facility at HMP Shotts (combined project value of £1.5m), a visits upgrade at HMP Edinburgh (project value of £1.5m), staff facility at HMP Glenochil (project value of £0.7m) and some improvements to staff and administrative facilities at HMP Aberdeen and HMP Greenock as part of wider prison developments (combined project values of £0.7m and £1.6m respectively).”

An amended version of the answer provided for question S2W-14008 is as follows.

Information based on all admissions to general acute hospitals during 2003-04 is shown in the table.

Complete data on psychiatric admissions is not available for 2002-03 or 2003-04. In 2001-02 there were 3,918 such admissions in Scotland for alcohol related conditions; 1,458 for drug abuse and two for obesity.

To ask the Scottish Executive, further to the answer to question S1W-7400 by Henry McLeish on 14 June 2000, whether it will publish an updated version of the answer reconciling the totals with the data in the table.

The Scotland totals in the table of the answer to question S1W-7400 are accurate. However, the table should have been issued with a footnote explaining why the Scotland totals did not match the sum of the figures in all the Scottish Local Enterprise Company (LEC) areas.

The Scotland totals are the published figures for the Scotland Jobcentre Plus region. However, the sum of all the Scottish LEC areas does not match the Scottish regional totals. This is because clients may have incomplete postcodes so cannot be allocated to a LEC area but are included in the Scottish total.

The Table is reissued below with the footnotes that were omitted in the answer to question S1W-7400.
