To ask the Scottish Executive how much electricity was generated in Scotland in each year from 2000 to 2003 and, of this, how much was generated by (a) hydro, (b) wind, wave or solar and (c) other renewable sources, as referred to in Indicators of Sustainable Development for Scotland: Progress Report 2005.
Answer
Statistics on electricity generation are collected by the UK Government’s Department of Trade and Industry. Generation figures, rounded to the nearest whole gigawatt hour (GWh), are detailed in the table below:

The data are supplied to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) by the electricity generating companies including autogenerators (those companies that consume the electricity that they themselves generate). Hydro pumped storage schemes are not included as renewable sources of electricity because it is non-renewable energy that is used to pump the water. Fluctuations in hydro output reflect in particular, the amount and distribution of rainfall and snow in Scotland across individual years. The amount of electricity generated is the total amount before taking account of any transmission losses or own use of electricity by the electricity generators.

To ask the Scottish Executive what improvements are planned for the Edinburgh/Glasgow to Aberdeen and the Aberdeen to Inverness rail links and what the estimated timescales are.
Answer
The Executive has initiated a range of work to inform decisions on changes to the network and services in future. We have commissioned a Scottish Planning Assessment to consider where the demand for rail services is likely to grow over the next 10 to 20 years, and to identify where the rail services may need to be adapted to meet this demand. We have issued a consultation asking for views on what the strategic priorities for rail should be. As part of the development of the rail strategy, Network Rail are undertaking a Route Utilisation Study, and this will identify opportunities for change over the shorter term. Services between Aberdeen and Edinburgh/Glasgow are part of these assessments.

To ask the Scottish Executive whether any assessment has been, or is being, made in respect of the impact of rising fuel prices and, if so, whether it will provide details of the assessment.
Answer
The taxation of fuel is a matter reserved to the UK Government. However, Scottish ministers are monitoring the current situation and will continue to ensure that Scotland’s interests are placed firmly on the agenda in Whitehall on fuel costs as on other matters, through direct contact with Treasury Ministers.

I have asked Angiolina Foster, Chief Executive of Communities Scotland, to respond. Her response is as follows:
The average cost of land per house in projects grant funded by Communities Scotland in each of the last five years and the percentage increase/decrease was as follows:
2000-01 Average price per plot = £2,984.
2001-02 Average price per plot = £3,137, 5.1% increase over the previous year.
2002-03 Average price per plot = £3,919, 24.9% increase over the previous year.
2003-04 Average price per plot = £3,447, 12.0% decrease over the previous year.
2004-05 Average price per plot = £4,411, 27.9% increase over the previous year.
