To ask the Scottish Executive how many manufacturing jobs were created through inward investment in (a) Scotland, (b) Glasgow and (c) Dundee in each of the last five years to 31 March 2002.
Answer
Scottish Development International does not keep records of how many jobs are created by individual inward investors in a given year. The published figures reflect the number of jobs which a company plans to create or safeguard at the time its decision to invest in Scotland was made. The published figures refer only to projects in which Scottish Development International and its partners can claim to have had a significant involvement in ensuring that the project takes place in Scotland. The following figures relate to projects where a company has made a decision to invest or expand and where the main activity of the project is manufacturing. Not all jobs created by a manufacturing project are necessarily manufacturing jobs.(a) Jobs in Manufacturing in Scotland

To ask the Scottish Executive what specific issues are being considered by the Working Group on Young Runaways and Children Abused through Prostitution.
Answer
The Working Group on Young Runaways and Children Abused through Prostitution is considering a wide range of issues including preventative strategies; guidance to professionals and promotion of good practice. This work is being taken forward within the context of the Executive's commitment to improve the quality of life for Scotland's children and deliver better outcomes for the most vulnerable and deprived children through more effective and integrated delivery of children's services.

To ask the Scottish Executive, further to the answer to question S1W-26266 by Cathy Jamieson on 5 June 2002, which local authorities have taken steps to provide short-term refuges for children and whether it plans to issue guidance to local authorities on this matter.
Answer
Local authorities have powers under the Children (Scotland) Act 1995 to provide short-term refuges for children. This could involve provision in a residential establishment or in the household of a foster carer or other approved carer.The need for guidance on refuge provision is one issue which will be considered by the Working Group on Young Runaways and Children Abused through Prostitution.

To ask the Scottish Executive what steps it is taking to reduce median waiting times for people awaiting cataract operations.
Answer
The National Waiting Times Unit is working with NHS Boards across Scotland to reduce delays for patients and in particular, to tackle lengthy waiting times.I announced on 20 June that the Executive intended to purchase the HCI hospital facility in Clydebank and transform it into a National Waiting Times Centre, which will work alongside NHS boards to cut lengthy waiting times across Scotland. It is planned to carry out 5,000 elective procedures, including cataract operations, in the centre's first year of operation.
