To ask the Scottish Executive which NHS trusts are not on target to completely comply with the interim technical requirements on decontamination processes by March 2003 as recommended in the Glennie framework on decontamination services and provision.
Answer
It is expected that all sites will comply with the interim technical requirements. However, one of the requirements for interim compliance is the installation and commissioning of compliant washer disinfectors. The demand for washer disinfectors currently exceeds the supply available on a UK basis and as a result it is unlikely that all sites that require new equipment will have them installed and commissioned by 31 March 2003. The procurement of the equipment is being co-ordinated centrally by Scottish Healthcare Supplies. In the circumstances it is likely that an extension of up to two months to the March 2003 deadline will be given to those sites currently awaiting equipment.

To ask the Scottish Executive what progress it is making in assessing the suitability of prescribing beta interferon and glatiramer acetate to people with multiple sclerosis.
Answer
NHS boards are required to make the necessary arrangements to ensure that their patients with multiple sclerosis who meet criteria set out by the Association of British Neurologists can receive treatment with beta interferon or glatiramer acetate under the risk-sharing scheme.Data collected under the scheme is maintained by the scheme co-ordinator, Sheffield University's School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR). ScHARR has advised that specialist centres in Scotland are prescribing under the scheme.

To ask the Scottish Executive whether it plans to group residential care homes and nursing homes together under the single term "care home"; if so, when it plans to do this and what effect such a change would have on the data published in the annual Scottish Community Care Statistics publication.
Answer
The distinction between residential care homes and nursing homes was removed on 1 April 2002, the day on which the new Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care (Care Commission) became operational. The removal of the distinction means that there will be no distressing moves for those whose care needs change. The single term "care home" is currently being used to describe establishments which were formerly known as either residential care homes or nursing homes, and from 2003 it is planned to conduct a regular "care homes" census which will replace the current census' of residential care homes (run by the Scottish Executive) and the nursing homes census (run by ISD, Scotland). The Executive is currently evaluating its own information needs, along with those of the NHS and the new Care Commission. The need to collect, analyse and disseminate the information published in Scottish Community Care Statistics 2001 remains.
