To ask the Scottish Government how many women have been recorded by NHS Scotland as having experienced a miscarriage in the last 12 months.
Answer
Accurate assessment of the number of all miscarriages that occur is not possible as only miscarriages that require hospital inpatient or daycase treatment are recorded.
All health boards provide individual treatment and support to women following a miscarriage, providing where appropriate a referral to an early pregnancy service or specialist maternity provision in smaller boards. Other support can include referral to counselling services and further follow up where required with details of third party support being provided where appropriate.
Setting the Scottish Budget is a year-round process and, as part of this, funding is provided to NHS Boards. The majority of funding is provided as baseline budget and NHS Boards have the discretion to direct this funding to local priorities.
