Network Rail’s budget for overhead line repair and maintenance in Scotland is around £6 million in each year of Control Period five.

The Scottish Government does not hold information on the specific number of incidents related to overhead line failure in each year since 2014.

Network Rail is responsible for managing the delivery of its business, including the deployment of its staff and their operational arrangements and the Scottish Government has no direct role in this. However, Transport Scotland officials work with the regulator, the Office of Rail and Road, and Network Rail to ensure that matters impacting on the railway network's performance are addressed.

Traffic management will remain in place until the scheme is open to traffic in the coming weeks. Transport Scotland and the contractor, Scottish Roads Partnership are working closely together to remove restrictions where possible. Once the new roads are open, final landscaping, finishing and snagging works will be ongoing as is normal with projects of this type, however, this should not affect peak traffic flows.

When undertaking work of this nature, some disruption is unfortunately unavoidable and any inconvenience caused is regretted. We would like to thank road users and local communities for their ongoing support and patience during these necessary works.

There is no statutory or common law requirement on Transport Scotland to pay compensation for loss of business. However, where possible Transport Scotland endeavours to provide advance warning of planned road works to road users. While it is not possible to contact each business that may be impacted directly, to highlight any proposed works, Transport Scotland has launched a significant media campaign, including social media, broadcast, radio and print, to inform the public of these necessary works.

Transport Scotland and SRP are working closely together to remove restrictions as quickly as possible as sections of the road become available for use and it is expected that the newly improved Shawhead junction will be fully open in the coming weeks.

The permanent signs to Coatbridge will be installed on the approach to the M8 westbound junction six Newhouse in the coming weeks as part of the M8 M73 M74 Motorway Improvements Project.

The A725 and A8 APR off-slips at Shawhead Junction were closed the weekend of Friday 12 May to Monday 15 May 2017 to continue essential construction works on the A725 and A8 All Purpose Road slip roads at Shawhead. Works included road surfacing, completion of centre islands, footpaths and installation of traffic signals. This closure allowed the contractor to undertake a significant amount of works which would not have been possible without further and longer peak time traffic restrictions.
