At face value, the Wise Group is saying that things have got better. The matter does not seem to be as much of a problem as it was when the committee visited the group’s offices in May. I am not sure where we can go from here.

I was quite alarmed to see in your submission that considering immediate rationalisation of the women’s estate could be one of the measures that you must consider—I am not saying that you said that you would do that. Can you expand on that and also say what impact it would have on the replacement for Barlinnie and so on?

I would like a bit of clarification. As I understand it, you do not want a flat cash settlement, but negotiated pay rises will cause massive job reductions in the police force. In previous years, have pay awards always led to a big reduction in staff? Have the two always been related?

Yes—that was part of the reason for my question. I do not remember the situation being this critical in previous years.

Where does that information come from? Does it come from the officers?
