Scottish Government response to the Careers by Design Report

Letter from the Minister for Higher Education, Further Education, Youth Employment and Training

Minister for Higher Education, Further Education, Youth Employment and Training
Jamie Hepburn MSP

Stephen Kerr
Convener of Education, Children and Young People Committee

 9 February 2022

Dear Convener

I am writing to let you know that the Scottish Government has today published our response to the Careers by Design Report, part of the Careers Review led by Grahame Smith and Skills Development Scotland (SDS) in response to a recommendation from Sandy Begbie’s No-One Left Behind: Initial Report on the Young Person’s Guarantee. The link to the publication can be found at www.CareerReview.Scot.

Sandy Begbie’s No-One Left Behind: Initial Report, set out the recommendation for Skills Development Scotland (SDS) to develop an implementation plan to take forward the recommendations in the Careers Strategy: Moving Forward (published in February 2020). In addition, SDS were asked to consider how best a career advice service could operate from early years right through until a young person enters employment.

The report sets out 10 recommendations for the future delivery of careers services. In developing their recommendations SDS have engaged with a range of young people and stakeholders to ensure it is comprehensive and representative. A list of the stakeholders engaged is included in the report.

I have confirmed I am content for the Programme Board to continue to work on early priorities and for Grahame to stay on as Chair as we move to the implementation stage.

I hope this update to the Committee is helpful and I would be happy to appear before you to address any questions you may have.

I am also writing in similar terms to the Convener of the Economy and Fair Work Committee, Claire Baker.
