Letter regarding Education Recovery Actions Taken and Next Steps report

Letter from Cabinet secretary for Education and Skills

Dear Convener

I am writing to make the Committee aware of the Scottish Government’s ‘Education Recovery: Actions Taken and Next Steps’ document, which has been published today.

From the outset of the pandemic, we have been working to protect children and young people from the worst impacts of Covid-19, and to support them to recover where they have been affected. This Scottish Government document, which has been developed through engagement with key partners, outlines our ongoing response to the impacts of the pandemic on education in Scotland, and sets out some key next steps we will take to address them. It also summarises how we plan to build on the innovation and strengths that have emerged during the pandemic, and incorporates key principles including diversity, equality and sustainability.

I hope that this information is helpful to the Committee and reassures you of our continued commitment to supporting children and young people to recover from the impacts of the pandemic. I look forward to appearing before the Committee tomorrow, and I am, of course, happy to answer questions on education recovery and on the detail of this document.

Yours sincerely

Shirley-Anne Somerville
