The People and Culture Office is pleased to introduce you to your Employee Handbook. This handbook brings together the information you need to know on how you can contribute to the Parliament, and what you can expect in return. So, whether you’re new to your role or have been here for a while, it’s important that you read and understand the content of this handbook and refer to it when you need to throughout your time with us.
During the course of your time here, you’ll be recognised for your personal contributions and your manager will assess your performance against clearly defined, fair and consistent standards. To enable you to do your most-fulfilling work, we’ll provide you with the support and development you’ll need to do your job, as well as the opportunities to learn new skills and progress your career. In turn, we expect you to act to the highest professional standards, both towards your colleagues and towards the organisation as a whole.
This handbook, along with our policies and your contract of employment, is your essential guide. It describes the values to which the parliamentary staff aspire, including our professional standards, and the standards that guide our own behaviour and our relations with our colleagues. You’ll find that a number of sections within this handbook provide summaries of our policies and procedures and you’ll be directed towards the full information and contacts for further help.
There are a number of benefits that our staff can use. You can find more information about these on the intranet.
The content of this handbook is non-contractual and it may be necessary for us to change it as we revise our policies. If there is any inconsistency between this handbook and your contract, the terms of your contract will take precedence.
Finally, in this handbook 'we', ‘us’ and ‘our’ refer to the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body (SPCB).
We want to make your first few days at Holyrood as exciting and enjoyable as possible. On your first day, you’ll be met by your manager who’ll take you to meet your new team and provide you with important information like your pay reference number and IT Account details. You’ll also have an assigned buddy who’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have in your first few weeks.
You're encouraged to take an active role to make sure that your induction is right for you and meets your needs. If you have any concerns, raise these with your manager at the earliest opportunity.
Induction here isn’t about attending a one-off event. We offer a wide range of different induction experiences to help you become familiar with us and our ways of working. This includes a mix of face-to-face sessions, text based materials and online resources designed to help you to understand our structures, working practices, standards, values and culture.
You'll receive your security pass on your first day. This must be worn at all times when you're in the Parliament building and removed when you leave.
