The visits, which continue a series of events in all eight Scottish parliamentary regions to mark the Scottish Parliament’s 25th anniversary, are to hear people’s reflections on the Parliament and their aspirations for its future. They will also reflect on 25 years of devolution and the impact of the Parliament on local communities.
The visit on Monday 4 November has been set up in collaboration with community partners - the Grampian Regional Equality Council (GREC), Stella’s Voice (a charity which works to address the impact of poverty) and Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action.
The Presiding Officer will be joined by North East constituency and regional MSPs to meet people who attend the GREC Language Café and other community and equality groups in Aberdeen Arts Centre that morning.
Later that day will see a visit to Stella’s Voice in Peterhead to meet with participants, staff, volunteers and community organisations who work with Stella’s Voice.
Speaking ahead of the visit, Presiding Officer, Rt Hon Alison Johnstone MSP said:
“I’m delighted to be visiting Aberdeen and Peterhead to meet local people and community groups, to hear about the challenges facing them and how their Parliament can to best meet the needs of their communities.
"Scotland’s Parliament belongs to all of its people. I am determined that we make every effort to ensure that all in Scotland can take part in the work of the Parliament.”
Maria Jose Pavez, Co-General Manager from GREC said:
"GREC is delighted to collaborate with the Scottish Parliament to recognise 25 years since its opening, and to promote engagement between MSPs and local communities here in the North East. We're looking forward to welcoming local equality groups and elected members on the day".
Ross Mackay, Co-General Manager from GREC said:
"The Scottish Parliament was designed to encourage participation and make it easier for people to get involved, and we're happy to support even greater participation opportunities looking ahead".
Mark Morgan, Chief Executive Officer at Stella’s Voice said:
“It is our privilege to welcome the Presiding Officer and members of the Scottish Parliament to Stella's Voice UK headquarters here in Peterhead. As we work to support the vulnerable and be a source of help and hope to those in need, this visit provides an invaluable opportunity for our local community to engage with the Parliamentary Team and talk about the issues that matter most to them. We look forward to a meaningful and productive visit.”
