To ask the Scottish Government when it will acknowledge and reply to the letter of 22 April 2019 from the Head of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of St Andrews, Professor Mark Chaplain, which set out a mathematical and scientific assessment of the breast cancer dosages in NHS Tayside.
Answer
Professor Chaplain’s letter was received and carefully considered by the Scottish Government following the publication of the Immediate Review Group report into the clinical management of breast cancer in Tayside. The letter was shared with the Independent Advisory Group, set up to advise on the implementation of recommendations made by the Immediate Review Group and Healthcare Improvement Scotland, for further consideration. We have apologised to Prof Chaplain that we did not respond directly upon receipt of his letter.

To ask the Scottish Government when it will publish the Right to Reply submission in response to the paper, Clinical Risk Assessment of the Healthcare Improvement Scotland Report, “Clinical Management of Breast Cancer in NHS Tayside”, which was submitted on 23 April 2019.
Answer
The Scottish Government has been advised by Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) that they received a right to reply submission from representatives of a number of staff at NHS Tayside, in response to its report, “Clinical Management of Breast Cancer in NHS Tayside”. This correspondence relates to an independent review carried out by HIS and taking actions on this is a matter for HIS.
We would however expect, as with all other matters, that Scottish Ministers be made aware of anything relating to the Scottish Government’s responsibilities. Any recommendations made by HIS to Government will always be carefully considered and actioned as required.
