To ask the Scottish Government how many cases of defective title deeds there have been in each year since 1999.
Answer
Title to land follows from either the recording of a deed in the Register of Sasines or the registration of the title in the Land Register of Scotland. The two registers currently hold around 2.5 million titles, and the Keeper of the Registers of Scotland keeps both registers.
A person affected by the registration of a title in the land register following a defective title deed may apply to the keeper for rectification of the title. The numbers of applications for rectification in the period from 1 April 2012, including applications by such persons, is as follows:
Period | Number of applications |
1 April 2012 to 31 December 2012 | 549 |
1 January 2013 to 31 December 2013 | 1260 |
1 January 2014 to 10 October 2014 | 1175 |
