Crass Cartoon

  • Submitted by: Kevin Stewart, Aberdeen Central, Scottish National Party.

That the Parliament condemns what it sees as the crass cartoon printed in The Times newspaper on 3 May 2024, featuring four Scottish National Party (SNP) leaders past and present with SNP logos around their necks, as if being hanged; notes that two parliamentarians have been murdered in the UK since 2016, leading to heightened security concerns for those elected to public office in recent years; believes that such violent imagery should have no place in political discourse, falls far short of what right-minded people would consider to be acceptable commentary, and contributes towards creating a toxic environment that puts people off wanting to take part in politics; further believes that suicide is no laughing matter, and calls on newspaper editors to give more thought to the messages that they are giving out before publishing such cartoons in the future.
