Selkirk Walkers Raise £200,000 for Cancer Charity in 35 Years of Walking

  • Submitted by: Rachael Hamilton, Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 03 May 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13080

That the Parliament congratulates the walkers from Selkirk who have raised £200,000 during their 35 years of walking in the local area; understands that the family of the late George Ballantyne has organised these walks since his passing; notes that 44 walkers gathered for the 2024 hike in damp and overcast conditions in the Yarrow Valley, with the aim of raising money for Cancer Research UK; understands that the 22-mile route was travelled along the Southern Upland Way, before dropping down and finishing in Selkirk; notes that this walk has taken place every year for the past 35 years and many of the participants of the walk have not missed a year since the feat was started, and thanks the Borderers who took part in raising so much money over the years for what it considers to be such a commendable cause.
