Celebrating 25 Years of Action for Children’s Gilmerton Road Short Breaks Service

  • Submitted by: Ash Regan, Edinburgh Eastern, Alba Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 23 February 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-12257

That the Parliament congratulates Action for Children on marking 25 years of providing short breaks, outreach, holiday support and support through appointments and transitions into adult services to families across Edinburgh and the Lothians; notes that, through its Gilmerton Road Short Breaks Service, it has supported and cared for over 100 young people with learning disabilities, complex needs and associated challenging behaviour; understands that feedback from parents has continually highlighted the compassionate approach of the Action for Children staff, as well as their individual commitment to young people, borne out by the fact that, through the Gilmerton Road service, Action for Children supports families for an average of nine years; believes that this service is keeping and upholding The Promise by offering fun-filled residential short breaks, thus helping keep families together by providing a break from caring responsibilities; welcomes the fact that the service has been a part of the community for such a long time, and wishes the staff, who provide young people and their families with much-needed support, care and love, continued success in the future.
