In Memory of Melanie Wilson - Melanie's Gift of Stationery

  • Submitted by: Bob Doris, Glasgow Maryhill and Springburn, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 12 February 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-12101

That the Parliament acknowledges what it sees as the tireless work of Amanda Ford through Melanie's Gift of Stationery, a project that was established by Amanda in 2021 in memory of her daughter, Melanie Wilson, who, it understands, was a talented young woman studying zoology at the University of Glasgow when she tragically and suddenly passed away on 21 January 2021 due to a brain tumour; understands that Melanie had a great love of both animals and stationery, and that it is the latter that has inspired Melanie's Gift of Stationery to gift stationery items such as pencil cases, note books and other items to young students in the Royston area of Glasgow and beyond; believes that this includes ensuring that pupils commencing P1 or transitioning from P7 to S1 in secondary school from Royston Primary School, will receive a stationery pack should they wish; understands that Melanie's Gift of Stationery hopes to build on this to develop partnerships with other local primary schools, local housing associations, youth and community groups; further understands that, for the last two years, Melanie's Gift of Stationery has provided a grant to a student at the University of Glasgow who has transitioned from further education to university, in recognition that this was Melanie’s route to studying zoology, having previously studied at Glasgow Kelvin College in Springburn; commends the efforts of Amanda Ford and her daughters, who offer their support; understands that Amanda refers to the four of them as "STEM-anists"; believes that the work of Melanie's Gift of Stationery can both be of public benefit to young people, as well as celebrating the life and memory of Melanie Wilson, and wishes Melanie's Gift of Stationery every success in the future.
